BTSCF Newsletter - October 2020

Just like that the weather turned and we’ve already had snow, CrossFit has named its “new” champions, and we have tons of things going on at BTSCF.

CrossFit Has “New” Champions

For those interested in the Sport side of CrossFit, we just had the opportunity to see the best in the world square off to determine this year’s CrossFit Games Champions. Last month, the top 30 men and women in the world faced off in a remote competition to complete Stage 1 of the Games. The top five men and women from Stage 1 would then meet in Aromas, CA at the Ranch to determine who would be named the fittest. This past weekend had 3 packed days of competition with these athletes facing numerous tests. In the end, Mat Fraser and Tia Clair Toomey came out on top with dominant performances. Fraser won his 5th consecutive CrossFit Games Title and Toomey won her 4th consecutive title, both records.

Toward the end of the Games, the announcement was made that the 2021 CrossFit Open will begin on February 18, 2021. Stay tuned for more details.

Tonya’s Ta-Ta Throwdown

Tonyas TaTa Throwdown.jpg

We had such an amazing turnout on October 18, where we were raising money in support of Tonya Addy’s fight against breast cancer. The day was a great opportunity to raise awareness and emphasize how important early detection self breast examinations are.

We had three classes run thought a tough, but fun partner workout:

10 Rounds for Time:

200m Double Water Jug Run (Partner 1)

200m Double Water Jug Run (Partner 2)

50 Double Water Bottle Power Cleans

50 Double Water Bottle Thrusters

BTSCF Halloween WOD & Trunk or Treat

We held our annual Halloween partner workout on 10/31. Members are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes, partner up, and have fun throwing down in a workout. After the workout, members went outside to decorate their trunks and give out candy to kids. We saw some great costumes and some well decorated trunks. It was a great time for all.

BTSCF Skills Classes

Skill Development Class.jpg

Taking some time to focus on building your skill set will help to improve your performance during your workouts. Each week we offer a different skill on Sunday mornings at 10:45am. We love seeing our members join us for these great classes. Here is a list of upcoming Skills Classes:

11/1: Stone Challenge Prep. Join Addy as he takes you through some tips, drills, and workout that will help you prepare for the Port Jervis Stone Challenge 2.

11/8: Kettlebells. There are many great things you can do to build strength with a Kettlebell. Paulie will take you through progressions and show you how to get the most out of a kettlebell.

11/15: Snatch. Frank will take you through this Olympic Lift and help you refine your skills.

11/22: Press Series. We can’t lie, it just looks really cool lifting weights over your head. Join Walt as he dives into the strict press, push press, and the jerk.

11/29: Double Unders: We are going to circle back to the jump rope with Addy and his happy feet. Like last time, this one is going to be a lot of fun.

Port Jervis Stone Challenge 2

It’s not too late to sign up for the Port Jervis Stone Challenge. We are a sponsor of this great event, now in its second year and can’t wait to see how big of a success it is. This event is a lot of fun, and raises money for the Port Jervis Outdoor Club who maintains the beautiful trail system we have right here in town.

Many of our members are already signed up. Don’t miss out on this fun event! The Port Jervis Stone Challenge 2 takes place on Saturday, November 7th at 9am. Click here to sign up!

We Want Your Food!

Sweating For Food.jpg

Last year BTSCF Coaches did over 4,000 burpees combined because our members made us. We’re looking forward to sweat again in the name of a great cause. Start saving your shelf stable items to donate. For each item donated, each coach will do a rep. A rep of what you might ask? Well, that’s going to be up to our members too! Stay tuned to see how to vote on which exercise our coaches will do. Already have shelf stable items ready to donate? Bring them into the gym to make sure they get counted.

Food donations will benefit Holy Trinity Food Pantry in Dingmans Ferry, PA.

Coach’s Picks

This month we asked Heather about her favorite childhood movies. Here’s what her podium looks like:

Spirit of the Games: Goonies is the ultimate kid adventure movie. Treasure maps, secret tunnels, pirates, booby traps and an awesome cave water slide. What can I say? The Goonies has it all. I watched this movie over and over again as a kid, teenager, adult, parent....you get the picture.

Dark Horse: Beetlejuice. Why is this movie so good? It’s perfect for a Halloween sleepover! Not too scary but creepy enough. The teen character IS suicidal and depressed but, no worries, it’s all resolved by the end. This movie is quirky and entertaining! The best part? Winona Ryder’s hair. You need to watch this one if you have never seen it!

Podium Picks

3rd: Back to the Future. The heart of the story is a kid coming to grips with the inadequacies of his parents, the difficulties of adulthood, and his own place in the world. By going back to 1955, Marty gets an upfront and personal look at his folks in their youth. He sees they were young like him once and had dreams and failures just like he does. The story is about time-travel and it’s amazing! A timeless, modern classic!

2nd: The karate kid (1 & 2) The Karate Kid is so wholesome and sincere and full of legitimately good lessons, and yet somehow doesn’t seem cheesy. It’s literal magic. It teaches you how to stand up to bullies and how to look people in the eye. These movies are so good, even my kids love them!

1st: Labyrinth This one is just such a throwback for me. It brings back memories of wishing I was finding my way through this strange (yet awesome) labyrinth. The dead-ends, wrong turns, lies and traps. The 101 minutes of a Bowie rock opera. It was dark and exciting and I loved every minute. If you have never met Hoggle or visited the “Bog of Eternal Stench”, you’re definitely missing out!
