BTSCF Newsletter - August 2021
It’s once again that time of year. Kids are starting to go back to school, sports are on the schedule, and the debate between the “Endless Summer” People and “Pumpkin Everything” People is in full force.
Holiday Hours Update
We will have special holiday hours on Labor Day. Our Class Schedule for Monday, September 6th will be 8:00am, 9:00am, and 10:00am. There will be no early morning or afternoon classes. We hope everyone enjoys the Holiday Weekend!
BTSCF Engine Builder
We are coming into the home stretch of our engine builder cycle. The group of athletes who are participating in the program have logged a ton of miles on the track and even more meters on the rower. Mechanics have improved, speed and distance has been gained. We can’t wait to see where these athletes end up in a few weeks.
The program concludes at the end of September with a 1 Mile Run and a 2K Row.
We select specialty cycles that not only will coincide with your CrossFit training, but will help improve your strength, endurance, and skills within those workouts. Interested in participating in our next specialty cycle? Talk to a staff member for information.
The PJ Stone Challenge 3
Did you know that registration is now open? Have you decided you’re going to do it already? Good! CLICK HERE to register!
Not convinced yet? No problem, here’s what you need to know.
The Stone Challenge will take place on Sunday, November 14, 2021 and is a test of strength and endurance in which you'll come to the mountain with a stone of your choice. Starting at the top of Point Peter, overlooking Port Jervis, you'll run down the mountain to retrieve your stone. Once acquired, you'll begin the difficult journey back to the top.
The Stone Challenge isn’t meant to be easy. It’s meant to be conquered.
THE CHALLENGE is 2.4 miles starting at the top of Point Peter. At the start, you'll have a 1.2 mile run down the mountain to your stone, then a 1.2 mile march back up the mountain while carrying your stone with nothing but your bare hands and the determination to be victorious.
Want a tougher challenge? Then THE PROVOCATION is for you. This race is 4.5 miles through tougher trails, designed to test your true determination and grit.
If you have more questions, visit The Port Jervis Stone Challenge Website for more details, or talk to a member of our staff.
BTSCF Feature Athlete
Meet Nicole Heyer
When did you start CrossFitting?
I started in 2014 at Blue Bridge.
If different, when did you start at BTSCF?
In 2017 right after they opened.
What brought you to CrossFit?
Initially I wanted to be more in shape for my wedding in 2015. After Jon and I took 2 years off we saw Mike, who also went to Blue Bridge, had opened his own gym in a better location and we wanted to check it out.
What have you learned from doing CrossFit?
Lots of things! That I can do hard things even when I think I can’t, to celebrate the small wins as they come because they are a part of the process, to stay in my own lane and focus on my effort, breaking down a movement and building it back up is a constant process, and the world is full of good people and a lot of them can be found at a Crossfit box.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?
Just do it. It’s that simple. Put your big girl (or boy) pants on and face the fear of something new because like they say getting out of your comfort zone is where life grows. You can be anywhere in the stage of your life and make it work for you and you’ll only become better.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Crossfit! But also lots of reading, exploring local breweries, playing Nintendo, and hiking when the bugs aren’t out.
What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?
I work at our local library where I get to do the really awesome task of ordering and cataloging all our material. There is more involved but that’s a really cool part of it. Crossfit has made my life a lot easier when I have to then lug the boxes of newly delivered books off the floor to catalog. No joke, a box of books can be rough at times.
We put Nicky through the lightning round, here’s what she had to say:
Q: What super power would you give yourself?
A: Teleportation! It would help make traveling the world more doable.
Q: What's your favorite healthy food?
A: Avocado! But lately chocolate hummus with strawberries.
Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?
A: Pizza of course.
Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?
A: New Girl
Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A: Oh I have no idea. My scary memory and ability to mess up music lyrics while belting them out at the top of my lungs?
Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?
A: You are the only one who can make life happen for you.
Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?
A: The ear pull of doom … when you are as small as I am you find people’s weakness quickly.
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?
A: Heather and Dee because they are both bada** women who leave their ego at the door- I really admire how both women break movements down and go back to basics to dial in form and longevity. But also being sappy here so many more people. Everyone has some kind of hardship in their life going on but it gets put to the side when they do the hardest thing by just showing up, working hard, and cheering each other on. The community at BTSCF is a huge motivation to keep showing up and trying to be a better version of me during my wods and outside of the box.
Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?
A: I’m not sure I have a favorite movement. I love seeing movements for the day that I’ve been focusing on getting better at, those days always make me happy. I sure do have a least favorite movement - assault bike for calories.
Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?
A: Double-unders. No lie it took almost 4 years to learn them. Also going up to new members and introducing myself. I’m super shy and awkward but I love how accepting BTSCF is and I want to be a part of making everyone experience that.
