BTSCF Newsletter - September 2022
Whether you want to accept it or not, pumpkin everything is around us now. This serves as a good reminder that the world will continue to move forward, if you’re not a pumpkin spice person, you cannot do anything to stop it, all you can do is focus on you. Putting your energy toward the things that make you better is where the magic happens. This applies to life in and out of the gym. Speaking of, let’s see what’s happening at BTSCF this month….

Meet John Goin
When did you start CrossFitting?
I started CrossFit in June 2019, after debating it for a year or so.
What brought you to CrossFit?
Honestly, I was tired of being the “old man” when I got a promotion. All my officers were in their early 20’s and I wanted them to know that I had their backs regardless of any situation. I get bored of doing the same thing when it comes to just lifting weights and I can never sit still and thought CrossFit would help. Kris and I talked and decided that the time was right to be a better version of ourselves.
What have you learned from doing CrossFit?
The biggest things I have learned is that I am better than my old self (if that makes sense). I have also learned that you can always push yourself more to get it done.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?
The one thing that I would say to someone on the fence about CrossFit is just give it a try. You never know unless you give it a chance.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I love everything about the outdoors. Hiking, fishing, kayaking and camping are some of my favorites. The best is sitting by a fire with Kristine.
What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?
I have worked for the Department of Corrections for a little over 22 years, and a Sergeant since 2017. CrossFit has given me the energy and stamina to do my job more effectively. It has also allowed me to show my officers that I have their backs in any situation.
We hit John with some rapid fire questions, here’s what he had to say.
Q: What super power would you give yourself?
A: I know it’s really not a superpower; however I would not mind being like Stretch Armstrong. Everyone knows I am not very flexible.
Q: What's your favorite healthy food?
A: Cajun rubbed fish tacos.
Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?
A: Toss up between Empanadas and a good Cheeseburger.
Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?
A: I would have to say Friends.
Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A: I don’t think I would want to be famous. I love the life I have with my wife, kids and family.
Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?
A: Love hard and don’t let a day go by without laughing.
Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?
A: The piledriver. (Editor’s Note: Piledriver might be the move, but I’d call it the “Snap, Crackle, Pop”)
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?
A: I look to everyone at BTSCF for inspiration, but more so my wife Kristine. She has been dealt with hand after hand and never stops.
Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?
A: Favorite was kettlebells, but deadlifts are definitely a top runner. My least favorite is the overhead squat.
Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?
A: That I could deadlift over 300lbs.
Q: Anything else you want to share?
A: I want to thank the BTSCF family for accepting me into their world. We have been to several boxes over the years but there is definitely no place like home.
