BTSCF Newsletter - February 2023

It is the shortest month of the year and it really felt like it. February flew by and Spring is almost here. Check out what is going on at BTSCF this month.

The CrossFit Games Open

Two weeks are down, only one week is left. We have been blown away by the turnout from our athletes during our Friday Night Lights events. They have brought an energy and effort that as coaches we cannot be more proud of.

Our athletes have tackled Rowing, Toes to Bar, Wall Balls, Cleans, Muscle Ups, Shuttle Runs, Burpee Pull Ups, and Thrusters.

What will Week 3 have in store?

The BTSCF Intramural Open

Over the first two weeks, the points have been tallied and Team Frank has pulled away with a lead. Team Heather is sitting in second with a narrow lead over Team Jon and Team Addy. Which team will come out on top?

Want to help your team win? The best way is to do the workout at Friday Night Lights, wear your team color, and check in on Facebook. If you’re not officially participating in the open, that is OK, you can still earn points for your team and modify the workout as needed just like you would any other day.

The Countdown to Mindful Madness Is On

Mindful Madness is only 45 days away. Information about the event and details to register can be found here.

In Case You Missed It

We took a look at the Shoulder Press as part of our Foundational Movement Series.

BTSCF Feature Athlete

Meet Vicente Vivieros

When did you start CrossFitting?

I started CrossFit in 2020 however due to the pandemic the material was limited and I had to do the workouts at home with my family for some time.

If different, when did you start at BTSCF?

I started at BTSCF in September 2022.

What brought you to CrossFit?

I have always liked participating in sports, before CrossFit I was more into soccer and Tae Kwon Do.  So after sometime of not being involved in anything due to studying, I decided to try something new. I never liked going to the gym so when my dad introduced me to his box and I saw the different types of exercises as well as the feeling of belonging to a team I was in and have been working on improving ever since.

What have you learned from doing CrossFit?

I have learned that it doesn’t matter what kind of life you come from, we all show up to become stronger and have fun. Also, that patience is important when becoming a strong athlete because in CrossFit I do not compete against anybody but myself.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?

I would tell them to not be afraid to start because CrossFit is very adaptable to every level and definitely worth a try because once you join you are now part of a community that supports you and is happy to see you grow.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Currently I like to spend my free time writing articles on medical entomology and collaborating with researchers from back home, I like taking my dog out on walks, spending time with Ashley and learning and improving my English.

What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?

For work I am a cake decorator at a supermarket and  in my free time I'm a biologist. CrossFit helps me destress, feel like I belong in a new country as well as makes me feel physically better.

We asked Vicente some lighting round questions, here’s what he had to say:
